There’s a lot to love about the holiday season, but who else gets kinda sad when it ends? One of our favourite parts of the holiday season is giving our homes decor a festive, seasonal upgrade. Here are a few timeless ways to incorporate Holiday decor to your home year round, courtesy of interior designer extraordinaire Maria DeCotiis.

Warm Up
One thing that comes to mind when we think about the holidays is the idea of warmth and coziness. The way to evoke these feelings through decorating is by incorporating elements with textures, from faux fur throws to plush stockings. Just like the feeling of a chunky oversized sweater, our homes should make us feel comfortable and warm. As the weather gets cooler and the days become shorter our homes play an even bigger part in our moods.
Au Naturel
Adding natural elements such as greenery and burlap help to balance all the soft texture and create the perfect juxtaposition. It’s all the layers that we add to a space that makes decor interesting, beautiful and serene.
Add Sparkle
The holidays are a joyous time spent with family and friends. Adding sparkle to your home through provides a festive feel to a space and adds a bit of glamour to the everyday. There is something magical when the lights from the Christmas tree bounce off of sequins and glitter!
Showstopper Staircase
Typically our stairs are visible as soon as you enter your home. Greet your guests with a staircase wrapped in faux garland or, for an even more elevated look, add real greenery to your railings. Combining the greenery whether real or faux with delicate details like bows and small ornaments is the perfect way to set the tone.
Have a Theme
Think about the direction you’d like to go before designing your home. If not thought through, your decor can appear too busy and instead of creating warmth and coziness, it creates a hectic atmosphere. Whether you choose a traditional, rustic, modern or whimsical style be sure to purchase items that coordinate. The cohesiveness will create an inviting and calming atmosphere.
Colour Story
It’s important to select items that complement our home’s current colour story and overall design. While red and green are the traditional holiday colours they may not always be the best option for your home.
Look to your space for colour inspiration and play off of the existing colour palette. Be sure to have fun with your decor and remember sometimes a few additions or swapping out current decor for holiday decor can make a big impact.
It’s All About the Details
Consider all the rooms in your home and add small holiday touches throughout, carrying the warmth through your entire house. Try adding ornaments in the kitchen or hang ornaments from your dining light for a surprising and beautiful element!
